High-growth startups fuel economic dynamism and receive substantial government support worldwide, often through acceleration programs. While the impact of these programs on businesses is well-documented, little is known about how they shape employee careers. We provide the first systematic evidence that startup acceleration enhances career trajectories through a “skills dividend.” Using a two-pronged approach—analyzing a large cross-program dataset from the Americas and a quasi-experimental study with administrative wage data from Colombia’s ValleE accelerator—we find that employees of accelerated firms earn higher wages over time without increased employability risks. These gains stem from transitions into other companies and roles requiring greater soft skills—behavioral and social traits that enable individuals to collaborate effectively—leading to more managerial, entrepreneurial, or leadership positions. Alternative explanations, such as certification and networking, are less consistent with the results. Our findings highlight the broader impact of accelerators on human capital development.

论文摘要
We document that local governments in China segment land markets by specifying land use, resulting in significant manufacturing land discounts relative to services and housing, especially in provinces with lower relative productivity in manufacturing. To analyze these policies, we develop a multi-sector quantitative spatial equilibrium model with free entry of firms, where local governments non-cooperatively specify land use to maximize local objectives. We find that maximizing local manufacturing output best replicates observed land pricing, particularly the negative relationship between relative land prices and relative manufacturing productivity across regions. In contrast, local-welfare-maximizing policies yield a positive relationship but still favor manufacturing, albeit less so, due to manufacturing's stronger amplification effect through input-output linkages, with comparative advantage and trade costs influencing policy outcomes. We find that current land policies reduce national welfare by 2.2% compared to a scenario of equal land prices across uses, while local-welfare-maximizing policies yield gains close to the cooperative equilibrium of 3.7%.

Geopolitical tensions are increasingly reshaping global markets by altering competitive dynamics in the host country. This study investigates how domestic firms and non-targeted multinational enterprises (MNEs) respond to market voids created when geopolitical tensions target specific foreign firms. Theoretically, we argue that geopolitical tensions generate host country sentiments that shift competition from primarily being capability-driven to sentiment-based, giving domestic firms a competitive edge over other foreign entities in filling market voids. Using the 2017 THAAD crisis—a quasi-experiment disrupting South Korean-dominated cosmetics markets in China—we found that Chinese domestic firms introduced significantly more new products post-THAAD compared to both targeted South Korean and non-targeted foreign rivals. However, this effect was weaker for domestic firms with foreign investments or more local market experience. By highlighting the role of sentiment-driven competition, this study advances our understanding of how geopolitical tensions reshape competitive dynamics beyond traditional market factors.
